Facing retirement means facing the cold hard fact of a likely increased need for medical care, no matter where in the world you live.

Puerto Vallarta offers first-class medical care, but not nearly on the grand scale that you’re probably familiar with in the U.S. or Canada.

On the other hand, residents here who have needed medical attention, either ‘routine’ or emergency, tend to crow about the quality of care they received especially when the cost is taken into account.

 

MEDICAL CARE in Puerto Vallarta is a bargain compared to ‘back home’. This is due to the lack of malpractice lawsuits in Mexico…they just aren’t allowed under this country’s legal system. This does not mean that doctors are less careful here – by all standards, in Mexican cities the quality of care is just as good as it is in the U.S. or Canada. It is merely a reflection of the type of law here which means there are and no expensive medical malpractice insurance premiums required of doctors and hospitals.

 

People from the U.S. are always amazed when they get the bill for a simple doctor’s office visit in Puerto Vallarta. For example, a visit to a dermatologist to diagnose and treat a rash may cost you 300 pesos, less than $30.00 (usd). The co-payment alone in the States is likely at least that much if you’ve got insurance. The drugs used to treat that rash are cheaper too, because pharmaceutical companies don’t have to worry about ridiculously large lawsuits.

 

DENTAL WORK is first class as well, so much so that it’s not uncommon for ‘Northerners’ to plan their vacation to Puerto Vallarta around needed dental work…you can save enough on a major dental project to pay for your airfare and hotel…and what better place to recuperate than in paradise!

 

PHARMACY: In Puerto Vallarta, most non-narcotic drugs are sold over the counter without a prescription, and are often considerably cheaper than in the U.S.A.
